The Indian Institute of Technology Dhanbad has secured 29th place globally for their Mining Engineering Course and has been ranked third among the Asian Institutes, and ranked 42 among Indian Universities in QS World University Ranking.

The Course offers the study of extraction and processing of minerals from the earth. Referring to the mining engineering, IIT Kharagpur stands at 40 among the world-class institutions. When referred to mining engineering, according to the QS World University Ranking, the top 5 ranks are secured by Colorado School of Mines (US), Curtin University (Australia), McGill University (Canada), Technische Universitat Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany) and Pennsylvania State University (US). A total of 50 institutes were ranked, out of which 15 were Asian Institutes.

The IIT Dhanbad is located at the prime location of coking coal belt over 260 km away from Kolkata. The Institute offers various courses that include B. Tech., M. Tech., M. Sc. Tech., and MBA courses, along with M. Phil. and Ph. D. programmes. The Mines schools offer the highest degree of D.Sc in Mining engineering. The Institute consists of 169 international students.

The Institute holds 173rd rank in BRICS and 261-270 position among Asian University Ranking.
