NCERT curriculum includes a chapter on National War Memorial of class VII from this year

A chapter on the National War Memorial – ‘A Homage to our Brave Soldiers’ – has been included in the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) curriculum of Class VII from this year. The objective of this initiative, jointly undertaken by the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Education, is to inculcate the values of patriotism, dedication to duty and courage and sacrifice among school children. The primary goal is to encourage greater involvement of the youth in nation-building endeavors.

The chapter delves into the history, importance, and concept of the National War Memorial (NWM). It also emphasizes the supreme sacrifices made by the bravehearts of the Armed Forces in service to the nation after India’s independence. In the chapter, two friends exchange letters and share their feelings of gratitude for the freedom they enjoy due to the sacrifices made by the bravehearts. The authors of the NCERT have creatively captured the strong emotional impact and connection that children experience when they visit this iconic monument.

On February 25, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially dedicated the National War Memorial (NWM) in New Delhi to the nation. The establishment of this memorial aimed to instill a sense of national spirit and sacrifice among the people, while also serving as a fitting tribute to the courageous soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the country.

As per NWM website, the requirement to construct a National War Memorial had been under consideration since 1961 at the apex level. The consideration acquired momentum in 2014 and after a deliberate process the Union Cabinet on 07 October 2015 approved construction of the National War Memorial & Museum (NWM&M) within the National capital’s Lutyen’s zone. Taking into consideration the existing ceremonial practices at India Gate and AJJ, the area East of the India Gate around the Canopy at ‘C’ Hexagon in New Delhi was found to be the most suited site for the Memorial.
