On Friday, the apex court stayed the Madras High Court verdict to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to grant compensatory marks to the students who attempted the NEET question paper in Tamil.

The Tamil translation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test(NEET) was flawed. Due to this, the students who answered reading the ‘erroneous’ Tamil translation of 49 questions have suffered.

Madras High Court ordered CBSE to grant grace marks to the students who attempted the paper in Tamil. This would have led to granting four marks each for all 49 questions, thus giving a total of 196 marks. The court asked CBSE to revise the merit list of the Tamil students based on the changed scores. However, CBSE challenged HC’s directive in the Supreme Court.

NEET was conducted on May 6 in India for undergraduate medical admissions.

Although SC ordered against High Court’s decision of granting grace marks to all students who attempted ‘erroneous’ Tamil translation.

SC bench justifying its decision said, “What will happen to the meritorious students? This is an all-India exam. And this is not some pass marks, but a bonus of 196 marks. These grace marks are given even without taking into consideration that students may have gone wrong in their answers even if the translations were accurate.”
