Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has announced his directorial debut titled ‘Barroz’ which will be a 3D film. Mohanlal shared the news on his blog on Sunday.

His blog reads, “In my journey with cinema for over four decades, even beyond a decisive juncture, comes a wonderful chance. I am directing a movie. From the one who enacted many different roles before the camera is moving behind.”

The film is set in Portuguese backdrop and is an adaptation of director Jijo Punnoose’s story Barroz – Guardian of D’ Gama’s Treasure. It is about a man who is guarding a 400-year-old treasure which belongs to the explorer Vasco Da Gama.

“The movie gives life to Jijo’s dream of directing a world cinema. I am performing the role of Barroz,” the post further reads.

Filmmaker Jijo Punnoose made ‘My Dear Kuttichathan’ in 1984, the first ever Indian movie to be filmed in 3D. Mohanlal earlier wanted a 3D stage show with director T.K. Rajeev Kumar, who took the idea to Jijo, but the plan had to be dropped due to a huge amount of cost.

He later got the chance to hear the story written by Jijo, with the title, ‘Barroz – Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure’. It is a story of a man named Barroz, who is a treasure guardian and is waiting for the right predecessor of D’Gama to handover the priceless treasure to him.

Mohanlal impressed by the plot, volunteered to direct the film with Jijo backing up the project.

Mohanlal’s last film ‘Lucifer’ is running successfully in theatres across the globe and has crossed ₹150 crores at the box office. It is expected to go past ₹200 crores and become the first Malayalam movie to go so far.
