Satyajit Ray's Two

Satyajit Ray’s filmography has been a whole cinematic university for aspiring filmmakers, transcending social barriers through his stories. Ray’s characters hold the power to build their place in your hearts. Most of his works are set across the countryside India and explored various themes be it related to human nature, societal structure, etc. The Apu Trilogy is one of Ray’s fine work and if you do well-versed research on Satyajit Ray films, you won’t find a single film that you can term as an average work.

Even Hollywood filmmaker Martin Scorsese is a big admirer of Ray’s works and his understanding of the cinematic world. Ray was honored by the Academy for his contribution to the cinema which clearly explains that cinema has no boundaries. Many of Ray’s films have been restored by the Academy and one such work is a short film titled Two which I recently came across. This twelve-minute short film blew away my mind. A silent short feature that explores the duality of happiness and in a way highlighting the gap in our society.

A still from Two

‘Unnecessary Competitive Instincts aroused within us to match our so-called rival. But the game has only one winner. Satyajit Ray’s 1964 short film ‘Two’ clearly defines the ‘Division of Class’ in India and it is uprooted so deep creating a major gap that cannot be bridged. This might be our story too, in this competitive world where we do unnecessary things for no good reason which we cannot explain to ourselves too. ‘Two’ has a deep message in it. Do watch it, it’s available on Youtube.
