The division bench of Justice R Subbiah and Justice C Saravanan of Madras High Court refused to stay the ordinance passed by Tamil Nadu government banning online gambling.

Junglee, an online gambling platform, had filed the petition stating that it is a respectable enterprise operating throughout India and that rummy has been held as a game of skill by the Supreme Court of India, hence the ban is not justified.

The petitioner also contended that many other states have not banned online gambling therefore Tamil Nadu govt. should not ban it.

The division bench while disallowing the relief sought did not stay the ordinance as a measure of interim-relief.

However, the court has directed the state government to submit its response by December 21, 2020.
