The next app to get the new Material Design makeover from Google could be Google Play Store, according to 9to5Google’s APK teardown of version 14.5.52 a few days ago.

The screenshots shared by 9to5Google show prevalence of white background, as seen on Gmail which has been subjected to the new Material Design. Notably, the updated version of Google Play Store, unlike the current version, does not show divider for apps and content within specific sections.

Since the Material Design offers a minimalist design, it might receive polarising feedback, given some people tend to like the use of color on their favorite app. Nevertheless, with the new Material Design offering a minimalist approach, it might be easier to find and install apps.

Firstly, there is a bottom navigation bar which includes the Home, Games, Movies & TV, and Books tabs. Each tab has its own color theme to give it a distinct look and makes it easy to track. The Home and Games tabs are green, Movies & TV is burgundy, and Books is blue. Unlike the current version, the top area near the search bar does not change colors, but only the tab section and the bottom tab lettering change color.

The search bar has its corners rounded and has seen the removal of Google Play watermark. The Google Play watermark has been replaced by a context-sensitive watermark. For instance,  the Home and Games sections feature a “Search for apps & games”  watermark while the Book section features a “Search book” watermark. Google has updated even the microphone design, and now it visualises the outline of the microphone instead of filling in the icon.

Moreover, app pages have been updated to have a all-white background with no visible dividers between sections. The install button has been widened significantly and the download progress has now been made to look like a circle that wraps around the app icon.
