In the wake of extreme protests and riots on the grounds of the Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh, the Indian government has imposed Section 144 of the Indian Constitution on the entire town of Aligarh. The morning of 4th May, Friday brought many restrictions down on the students of the Aligarh Muslim University. The internet services have been suspended throughout the campus and an act prohibiting the gathering of more than 4 humans in an area has been exacted on the university.

The history behind this dates back to the previous week when over a thousand students of the facility decided to boycott classes for 5 days in order to show their aggression towards the BJP MP Satish Gautam ordering Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s portrait to be taken down from the Student Union’s office in the AMU. Protests and riots were held by the students of the university when they stood up against the removal of Jinnah’s portrait supporting the rightful place of the Muslim leader who played an important part in the university’s history and had been rewarded a life membership to the union for that.

Earlier this week, when the BJP began showing signs of dissatisfaction towards the hanging of the portrait, members of the Hindu Yuva Vahini, a right-wing organization, launched mayhem within the grounds of the varsity which resulted in an all-around brawl with the students, which resulted in over 41 people being critically injured. The Criminal Procedure Code had to be imposed in order to prevent any other major injuries in the state.
