Election Commission of India announced the dates of by-poll for two Rajya Sabha seats on Thursday. By-polls for the Upper House are slated for one seat each from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Important Dates-

  • Both the seats will go for by-polls on October 16.
  • Notification regarding the elections will be issued on September 27. The nomination procedure wills start from the same day.
  • Counting of votes will be done on the election day only, i.e. October 16 at 5.00 pm

Uttar Pradesh seat fell vacant due to the untimely demise of former Union Finance minister and BJP leader, Arun Jaitley. Arun Jaitley died on August 24 due at AIIMS due to cancer.

Bihar seat was vacated by the death of lawyer Ram Jethmalani. He was a Rajya Sabha member from the Rashtriya Janata Dal. Ram Jethmalani died on 8 September 2019 at his home in New Delhi.

ECI previously also announced the by-poll dates for 63 assembly seats and 1 Lok Sabha seat. By-polls for 64 seats is to be held on October 21 alongside the assembly elections of Maharashtra and Haryana. The counting of votes will take place on October 24.
