A Sikh Delegation led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) North East leader Tarun Chugh on Friday called on Minister of State (MoS) Home Affairs Nityanand Rai and raised the issue of security of Sikh community living in Shillong.

A Delegation, later in the day, also met Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma at Meghalaya Bhawan situated at Vasant Vihar in the national capital.

The Sikh community of the state is living in fear and seeking protection after violent clashes erupted in the Punjabi lane of Shillong between Khasi tribes and Dalit Sikhs in June 2018.

Reportedly, both the ministers have given assurance of providing every possible help to the Sikh community to protect them.

Reportedly, Dalit Sikhs living in the area were served notices by Shillong Municipal Board asking them to provide documents that can prove that they are the owners of the land in the locality. The community earlier also alleged that they are getting threats from the local terrorist groups of facing dire consequences if they don’t comply with the government attempt to evict them.

Assuring the Sikh community, Chief Minister Konrad Sangma said, ‘We will not let any illegal activities in the state. We have fought with terrorist organizations earlier too in Meghalaya and we will do same this time too’.

He added, ‘Earlier the issue was sorted out without harming anyone, I again assured you that issue will be resolved and no one will be harmed, I will soon find a permanent solution to fix the issue’.
