Azam Khan - Jaya Prada

The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday served notice to Rampur MP and Samajwadi Party Stalwart MP Azam Khan in connection with a plea filed by BJP leader Jaya Prada, challenging his election from the parliamentary constituency.

During the hearing in the plea, High Court Judge Saumitra Dayal Singh posted the matter for August 21, 2019, as the next date. While it also issued a notice to Rampur MP Azam Khan.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Leader Jaya Prada on July 6 filed an election petition in Allahabad High Court challenging the election of Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan from the Rampur parliamentary constituency for holding an ‘office of profit’.

In the plea filed by BJP Leader, it has been alleged that Samajwadi Party Staunch Leader Azam Khan, at the time election, held a post of the Chancellor of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, which was an office of profit.

She further alleged that Khan made religious appeals to get votes which are a violation of Representation of People Act.

Earlier, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court had on June 13 dismissed Jaya Prada’s petition, stating that Rampur fell under the jurisdiction of the Allahabad High Court.

In the same order, the Lucknow Bench of the High Court also said that the writ petition itself is not maintainable for the challenging election of a winning candidate. The order further added instead of the writ petition, an election petition can be moved in such circumstances.

Both Prada and Khan had a bitter spat with each other during the campaigning of Lok Sabha Polls. In a run-up to the national polls, the Poll Body imposed a ban on Samajwadi Party Senior Leader Azam Khan from election campaigning for 72 hours for making derogatory remarks on BJP Leader and his opponent Jaya Prada.

Jaya Prada joined Bharatiya Janata Party in March early this year and was pitched against Samajwadi Party Staunch leader Azam Khan.

In the recently held national polls, Azam Khan defeated Jaya Prada with over 1 Lakh votes from Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur Lok Sabha Seat.
