Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal party launched its membership drive on Monday. The party’s goal is to expand its base from 47 lakh to 1 crore in two months.

The announcement of the launch came on the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi from party headquarters where the Chief Minister was addressing the media. To spearhead and coordinate the membership drive, a seven-member state-level committee has been set up. The panel comprises Rajya Sabha member Prasanna Acharya, Government chief whip Pramila Mallick, MLAs Pratap Keshari Deb, Pradeep Panigrahy and Pranab Prakash Das and former minister Sanjay Das Burma. The convener of the committee is former minister Debi Prasad Mishra.

It is expected that during the membership drive, the party members will interact with the farmers, women, youth and weaker sections of the society. The membership drive will be concluded on 31 October. In a unique stand, Biju Janata Dal has decided to collect Aadhar numbers of new members.

On a related note, Bhartiya Janta Party had also launched its membership drive earlier in July for Odisha polls. The saffron party’s target was to increase its members to 50 lakh from the present strength of 36 lakh.
