Bhartiya Janta Party nominated its recently-inducted Surendra Singh Nagar and Sanjay Seth to the seats of Rajya Sabha by-polls in Uttar Pradesh. These two former leaders of Samajwadi Party had joined the saffron party on 10 August.
The candidature of both the candidates was announced by BJP’s working president Jagat Prakash Nadda. Both the seats fell vacant after Seth and Nagar resigned from Rajya Sabha and later joined the Bhartiya Janta Party. Previously, another prominent face of Samajwadi party Neeraj Shekhar, son of former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar, had also joined BJP.
Along with the announcement of names for 2 seats of Rajya Sabha, the party also announced candidates for other seats in upcoming by-polls. Ojasvi Mandavi has been selected to contest by-poll from Dantewada seat in Chhattisgarh. By-polls have been necessitated by the vacancy on these following seats. The death of sitting legislators from Dantewada, Pala and Badharghat made the respective seats fall vacant. While in Hamirpur, BJP MLA Ashok Chandel was disqualified.
