What can be seen as big catches for Indian National Congress in its hunt for Uttar Pradesh for Lok Sabha Polls, Bhartiya Janta Party Sitting MP Savitri Bai Phule and a former Samajwadi Party MP Rakesh Sachan joined Congress on Sunday.

Savitri Bai Phule and Rakesh Sachan joined the Congress in the presence of Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Uttar Pradesh General Secretary for East and West Priyanka Gandhi and Jyotiraditya Scindia respectively.

Savitri Bai Phule was elected on Bhartiya Janta Party Ticket in 2014 General Elections from Baharaich Parliamentary seat. However, She later resigned from the saffron party accusing it of dividing the society and doing nothing for the reservation.

She had in 2014 won for the first time from an SC reserved seat. She started her political career with Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) but later joined the Saffron party. A prominent Dalit leader had been raising her voice against the saffron camp for more than a year now and was positioning herself as a leader in her own right. She had also billed the BJP as “anti-Dalit”.

She said as quoted by ANI, ‘I have Congress to save Constitution of the Country, I will strengthen the hands of Congress who can take on Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP)’.

Another prominent leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP), Rakesh Sachan, a former MP from Fatehpur, also joined the Congress. These are being seen as big catches for the Congress, which is trying hard to make a comeback in Uttar Pradesh.

After being dropped from Samajwadi Party – Bahujan Samaj Party Alliance, Congress has intensified it’s mission Uttar Pradesh. Congress President Rahul Gandhi had last month appointed his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and general secretary in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh and party MP Jyotiraditya Scindia as that of Western Uttar Pradesh to galvanize party’s poll preparations in the state that sends 80 MPs to Lok Sabha.

Earlier on February 24, Intensifying its hunt to outdo Opposition in Uttar Pradesh, Congress on Sunday appointed its campaign committee, election strategy, and planning committee, coordination committee, manifesto committee, and media and publicity committee as part of its poll preparations.
