Supreme Court collegium has recommended the name of Justice V Ramasubramanian as the new Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh.

Justice V Ramasubramanian’s name has been recommended by the collegium for the position of the Chief Justice of High Court of Himachal Pradesh. 

“Mr. Justice V. Ramasubramanian is the senior-most Judge from Madras High Court and at present is functioning, on transfer, in Telangana High Court. Having regard to all relevant factors, the Collegium is of the considered view that Mr. Justice V. Ramasubramanian is suitable in all respects for being appointed as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. The Collegium resolves to recommend accordingly,” states the collegium resolution of May 10th.

Justice V. Subramanian is the senior most judge of the Madras HC. The seat of the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh fell vacant after Justice Surya Kant Rao was appointed as a judge of the SC. The appointment of Surya Kant as a judge of the SC was done “keeping in mind the desirability of giving due representation on the Bench of the Supreme Court, as far as possible, to all the High Courts,” states the collegium.

Justice Surya Kant’s appointment as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh HC was rejected by the Justice AK Goel, a judge of SC at that time.But Justice Surya Kant Rao was appointed as the chief justice in 2018 and this decision was conveyed through a notification of the collegium dated October 3, 2018.
