Ruling Biju Janata Dal heavyweight and Vice President of the party Surjya Narayan (SN) Patro was unanimously elected as the speaker of the 16th Odisha Assembly on Saturday. Senior Leader of the Odisha ruling party SN Patro’s name was proposed by the CM Naveen Patnaik.

He was elected as the Assembly speaker unanimously as there was no candidate for the post of the speaker house. Protem Speaker Amar Prasad Satpathy announced the name of the assembly speaker. While the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were not present in the house.

“Congratulate Shri Surjya Narayan Patro ji on being unanimously elected as Speaker of Assembly. Wish, under his leadership, the august House continues to work for the welfare of the people of , in a true democratic spirit”, tweeted Naveen Patnaik congratulating Patro.

Patro who was elected as the 22nd Speaker of the Odisha Assembly thanked CM and MLAs for their cooperation. ‘Let me thank Hon CM Shri for bestowing me with the honor of being the Speaker of 16th Odisha Assembly. At the same time I would like to assure the people of Odisha that I would impart my duty sincerely’, he said in a tweet.

Biju Janata Party (BJD) President Naveen Patnaik on May 29 took oath as the Chief Minister of Odisha for a historic fifth term. He inducted 11 Cabinet Ministers and 9 Ministers of State who also were administrated oath along with Patnaik by Governor Ganeshi Lal.

Naveen Patnaik-led BJD stormed back to the power in the recently concluded state polls bagging 112 seats, 5 less than what they had won in 2014 State polls. Odisha has a total of 147 Assembly seats.

While BJP won 23, Congress 9 and one each bag by CPI-M and Independent Candidate. Odisha has a total of 147 Assembly seats.

While in national polls, BJD won 12, BJP managed to make inroads in the state with its victory on 8 Lok Sabha Seats while Congress only won a single Lok Sabha Seat.
