West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee calls on DMK Chief MK Stalin as parliament approved scrapping Article 370

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) Supremo Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday called on Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief MK Stalin in Chennai.

While on Wednesday, Mamata Banerjee paid tribute to DMK Patriarch M Karunanidhi on his death anniversary. Taking to Twitter, TMC Chief said, ‘Tribute to M Karunanidhi, former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, on his death anniversary’.

The meeting between two regional bigwigs comes on the backdrop when the parliament approved to resolution scrapping Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir.

The lower house of the parliament, Lok Sabha, also approved the bill that sought to bifurcate the Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories – Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Jammu and Kashmir as a one Union Territory will have a legislature along with an L-G, while Ladakh without legislature.

It should be noted that DMK, who contested polls with Congress, had been openly slamming the Centre’s move to revoke the Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. While the Trinamool Congress (TMC) seems to be divided over the issue with many of its MPs like Sukhendu Sekhar Ray backing the centre’s decision about Jammu and Kashmir.

The Lok Sabha on Tuesday approved the resolution to scrap Article 370 from the valley and also cleared the bill to bifurcate the Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories – Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Jammu and Kashmir as a one Union Territory will have a legislature along with an L-G, while Ladakh without legislature.

Prior to this, the Upper House of the parliament, Rajya Sabha, on Monday, gave its nod to the resolution scrapping Article 370 from the valley that gives special status to the state. Speaking in the House, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said section 370 was the root of terrorism in the valley.

He further asserted that his government is fully committed to make Jammu and Kashmir, one of the developments and most progressive state of the country.
