Microsoft, OpenAI extend partnership; Altman, Brockman lead new AI team

Microsoft and OpenAI on Monday announced that they are continuing their partnership, which will focus on developing safe and beneficial artificial intelligence (AI). Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, along with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team.

Microsoft is optimistic about the shared product roadmap and believes in the potential for continued innovation, as evidenced by the recent announcements made at Microsoft Ignite. The company also emphasizes its dedication to supporting customers and partners in their AI endeavors.

“We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft.

A notable development arising from this collaboration is the introduction of a new leadership team. Microsoft expressed eagerness in getting to know Emmett Shear and the fresh faces at OpenAI’s helm. This move underscores a shared vision for the future of AI and the determination to work closely in realizing its full potential.

Expressing enthusiasm about this new endeavor, Microsoft highlighted its commitment to swiftly provide the necessary resources to ensure the success of the advanced AI research team. This move aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy of investing in cutting-edge technologies and fostering innovation.

Microsoft and OpenAI have a long history of collaboration. In 2019, Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI to support the development of safe and beneficial AI. The two companies have also collaborated on a number of projects, including the development of the Azure AI supercomputer and the GitHub Copilot AI coding assistant.

The addition of Altman, Brockman, and their colleagues to Microsoft is a major coup for the company. Altman is a well-respected figure in the AI community, and Brockman is a technical leader with a deep understanding of AGI. The new AI research team is sure to be a major player in the development of this important technology.
