Sourav Ganguly

Indian Cricket has seen some of the most memorable moment and celebration. From winning the 1983 World Cup to the winning six of 2011 World Cup, from Yuvraj‘s six sixes to Sreekant’s winning catch of the first T-20 World Cup. One such memorable moment is Dada’s shirt-waving celebration at the Lord’s in the final match of the Natwest Trophy in 2002 after winning against England.

This act was a revenge for Andrew Flintoff’s pulling off his t-shirt.  The English all-rounder earlier that year had celebrated by pulling off his shirt after England won an ODI match against India at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. So Ganguly also decided to celebrate this win over England in the same way, pulled of his t-shirt and waved it from the dressing room.

Fifteen years later, his incident was revised in everybody’s mind as on India vs Sri Lanka match on Thursday, former England captain Mike Atherton while commentary spotted Andrew Flintoff in the ground. He then said to Ganguly, who was his partner in the commentary box, “Flintoff in the ground. Don’t take off your shirt and start waving it around, Sourav. He took off his shirt once and forced you to do it at Lord’s. One of the worst sights at home of cricket.”

Ganguly at this replied, “You think so?”

India lost the match by 7 wickets and now will have to beat South Africa to reach the semi finals.
