Uber has launched its smaller version, Uber lite for India and other emerging markets. The app is about 5 MB in size. The design of the app is such that it has a 300-millisecond response time, which ensures Uber’s booking process is fast even for users who have a slow connection.

About Uber lite

Uber Lite uses the rider’s GPS location to guess possible destinations if it cannot detect your location because of GPS or network issues; it will surface popular pickup points nearby for you to choose.

It was designed to make booking rides easier, quicker in spotty connectivity, and slower than average internet speeds, on basic Android phones, and for people with limited data plans. The more you use Uber Lite, the smarter the app gets, learning where you go most often and surfacing those options for you to tap first, so you don’t have to type your destination every time. Uber Lite is currently available only for Android users.

Uber said it wants to capture the “next hundreds of millions of riders” in India who will be coming online through low-cost smartphones and cheap data plans. The app will soon add multiple language choices and the ability to book rides offline.

Compared to the 181-megabyte standard version, Uber Lite is a lot easier for low-storage phones to handle. Payment, for now, is cash only. Soon Uber plans to add India’s popular Paytm payment platform and credit card options. It is also still lacking notifications
