Seoul, May 22: As per the United Nations divulged data on Wednesday showed Switzerland has donated around USD five million worth humanitarian assistance to North Korea in a bid to improve nutrition and health condition in the impoverished nation that is currently facing its worst drought in decades.

According to ANI news reports, as per the data offered by the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs (OCHA) which is responsible for tracking incoming funds for aid agencies, about USD 4.98 million has been donated by Switzerland last month for the WFP (World Food Programme) missions in North Korea.

The data also showed Russia came next to provide humanitarian assistance to North Korea worth USD four million, followed by Canada and Sweden with USD 570,000 and USD 2.44 million, respectively.

North Korea has been suffering from its worst drought since the last 37 years, triggering fears that crops which are due to be harvested next month – Barley and wheat- could also suffer.

The United Nations security council (UNSC) has on Monday granted sanction exemption to a humanitarian assistance group, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), to carry out aid supplies to North Korea in order to improve the nutrition and health of people living in the impoverished nation.

The sanction exemption which was granted on April 11 makes ways for the UNICEF to import humanitarian supplies to deliver it to communities and also enables effective measures at hospitals, particularly malnourished women and children, the global humanitarian outfit stated in its report.

South Korea has said on Friday North Korea, currently facing severe drought, should be offered food-aid despite Pyongyang’s recent missile tests and launches.
