The United States Senate has on Wednesday held a vote session which resulted in 54-46 to block the intervention of the United States military in the Saudi-led coalition war in Yemen. The US Senate passed bill seek an end of American military involvement into the Yemen civil war within 30 days.

According to Al-Jazeera news reports, Senator Bernie Sanders said, “We have the opportunity to take a major step forward in ending the horrific war in Yemen and alleviating that terrible, terrible suffering being experienced by the people in one of the poorest countries in the world.”

Senator Chris Murphy said, “There is no secret as to why there is a cholera epidemic. It’s because the Saudis bombed the water treatment facilities so the water isn’t clean anymore.”

The bipartisan vote was 54 to 46 and considered to be a rebuke to US President Donald Trump’s support to Saudi Arabia and its leader despite recent tensions. Trump has pledged to veto the draft resolution.

The war in Yemen which began in 2015 and has left thousands of Yemenis dead and millions more starving.

The US sells weapons used by the Saudis and its military provides logistical and intelligence support to the coalition for drone strikes.

However, Trump has threatened a veto to the joint US House and Senate resolution if it reaches to his table.

The White House has said the resolution would “harm bilateral relationships in the region” and also “negatively affect our ability to prevent the spread of violent extremist organisations” like al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (ISIS) of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
