Lots of road presence, three engine options and an affordable price tag. Is there anything else you will consider while going for a new car? Probably not and interestingly, that’s how this new premium hatchback segment was born.
Currently, Maruti Suzuki Baleno is the best seller from this segment. But, if you are someone who wants to buy something different then, the all-new Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz can definitely be the right choice. Confused between both of them? Let’s figure out which one is a better hatchback for you and why.
Hyundai i20
At some point in time, i20 was one of the best selling products in India. The downfall started when Hyundai came up with the third-gen model where the design was quite subjective and the price tag was on a slightly higher side.
Although, people didn’t buy the new i20 as much as the last model but in terms of features, the updated hatchback is one of the best in its segment. Just to name a few, it comes loaded with an electric sunroof, 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, up to six airbags and a 7-speaker audio system depending upon the variant.
The entry-level petrol variants will be featuring a 1.2-litre four-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine. To be precise, this power unit is capable of churning out a decent 86BHP and 114Nm of peak torque. Thankfully, the brand is still trusting its mile muncher 1.5-litre diesel engine that comes with overall output rated at 98BHP and 240Nm.
Last but not least, Hyundai wants you to experience fun and that’s why a 118BHP, 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is also there on the top-end variants. For transmission duties, i20 is available with both manual and automatic gearbox.
Tata Altroz
Altroz entered the Indian market as the best looking premium hatchback but out of surprise, it is now even the safest of all. The hatchback earlier scored a 5-star rating at the Global NCAP and since then, it is one of the complete packages in every aspect.
Feature-wise, the car manufacturer has loaded it with a floating touchscreen infotainment system by Harman, cooled glovebox, mood lighting, Hinglish voice commands and dual airbags.
Tata Motors does not want to stay behind and the efforts are now visible. To begin with, just like the i20, even Altroz is available with three engine options. Firstly, the 1.2-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine produces 84BHP and 113Nm of torque.
Next is the reliable 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine with overall output rated at 88BHP and 200Nm. Interestingly, diesel engines return the highest mileage and therefore, demand for them is still high. To end this, the carmaker has also introduced a powerful 108BHP, 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine for people who classify themselves as car enthusiasts.
Transmission duties for all these power units are managed by manual as well as automatic gearbox depending upon the variant.
