‘Majority of the buyers don’t even indulge in hardcore offroading’, says the automotive world and it is justified because Mahindra without any second thought has introduced a new Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) model of its best-seller, the mighty Mahindra Thar. It’s the carmaker’s decision and we think they have done their part of research before introducing this new iteration.

Always wanted a Thar in your garage? This new SUV is now available with a mind-boggling price tag of Rs.9.99 Lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). But what it has got to offer? We are sure that that’s the only thing you want to hear right now.

Without pushing it any further, introducing the all-new Mahindra Thar RWD.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Mahindra Thar RWD has made its way to India.
  • Comes with an introductory tag of Rs.9.99 Lakhs.
  • A downsized diesel engine has been introduced.

Mahindra Thar RWD: What’s new?

Mahindra has made it very clear that the above-mentioned price tag will be for a limited number of people. Only the first 10,000 bookings are to be accepted at such low prices and this way, buying it right now makes sense. For reference, the new RWD model undercuts the 4×4 variant by a huge Rs.3.60 Lakh margin.

Now, apart from being a rear-wheel drive iteration of Thar, this new variant is also said to be available with a downsized diesel engine which means less power and better fuel efficiency. Yes, a 1.5-litre diesel motor that churns out a decent 117 horsepower and 300Nm paired to a manual gearbox is powering it. Of course, the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine is exactly the same but it is currently available with a 6-speed automatic gearbox only.

The Indian manufacturer has also introduced two new paint schemes for the range namely – Everest White and Blazing Bronze but it is not limited to RWD variants. Thankfully, even the 4×4 lineup gets it. Another change on the 4×4 model is that it is now equipped with a Bosch electronic brake locking differential. The older mechanical locking differential has been discontinued and is now an additional accessory limited to the LX Diesel variants.

Looks like Mahindra is planning to capture the market of Maruti Suzuki Jimny with this new rear-wheel drive model of Thar. Recently, Jimny has been showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo suggesting that the launch is imminent.
