KOLKATA: The Coronavirus which was discovered, in November 2019, by one doctor in Wuhan, has ended up infecting ~24 Lakh people around the world with a death toll of 1.7 Lakh, till date. Now a report, by International Labor Organization (ILO), has predicted that around 270 Crore people will be affected due to the total or partial shutdown of companies as this virus sweeps over the world.

Several nations, around the world, have resorted to enforce strict counter-measures including a curfew, border closure, and suspension of training, in an effort to fight this pandemic. Consequentially, businesses are severely affected and unemployment rates have hit a global high.

Some companies are forced to cease operations and others had to revise their work schedules along with employee remunerations, to conserve costs, during this time of restrained economic activities. DPA experts are saying that the increase in global unemployment will primarily depend on further coronavirus outbreaks and the measures our leaders will take to curb it.

The ILO has emphasized that 270 Crore, of the 330 crore able-bodied people, will be affected by the the coronavirus pandemic and its negative effects. This number adds up to 81% of the global workforce.

The COVID-19 pandemic will lead to a reduction in working hours, around the world, in Q2 of calendar year 2020.

Experts have pointed out that education, health, public services, social services, defense, and infrastructure sectors will be the least impacted amongst all.
