Drop Rajiv Gandhi name from south campus, suggests BHU panel

The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) court has suggested the academic council to change the name of Rajiv Gandhi South Campus Barkachha in Mirzapur District because he made ‘no contribution’ towards the development of the educational institute.

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is the Public central and largest residential university in Asia. The BHU court, chaired by Chancellor Giridhar Malviya, retired Allahabad High Court Judge confirmed the proposal will be sent to the academic council of BHU.

As per the proposal backed by all BHU court members, Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi never visited the varsity and did not help in the development of the varsity.

Rajiv Gandhi was the 6th and youngest Prime Minister of India, husband of Sonia Gandhi, Interim President of Indian National Congress. He was assassinated by Sri Lanka’s LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) group in 1991. The south campus was named after him in 2006 by former HRD Minister Arjun Singh.

Meanwhile, BHU was in news for the appointment of a Muslim professor for teaching Sanskrit. The students protested against the appointment of Professor Feroz khan teaching Sanskrit, saying a Muslim cannot teach them about their religion. Although, the protest was called a hooligan to show the authority what students can achieve.

Feroz Khan had to resign from the post of Sanskrit teacher but has been appointed as the Assistant Professor in the university’s Sanskrit Vidya Dharma Vijnan (SVDV) department.
