UGC has prepared directives to regulate fees charged for private universities: HRD Minister

Amid the tension revolving around the country about increasing fees structure, UGC (University Grant Commission) which looks after the development and maintenance of Higher Education has decided to provide directives to regulate private universities including the capitation fees, said Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ on Monday in the winter session of Parliament.

He further said UGC is asking suggestions on its website from all stakeholders. The HRD Minister answered the question asked in the Lower House of Parliament, Lok sabha whether the UGC is considering to include regulations to control the practice of charging capitation fees.

On which, HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said the Commission has prepared the UGC (Fees in professional education granted by private unaided and aided Institute deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2019.

A final decision will be taken after the receipt of comments from stakeholders placed on the UGC website.

Meanwhile, Gauhati University, Assam has jeopardized the future of 74,00 students by offering 21 unapproved courses through its distance learning center for seven years. It gave false affidavits to UGC.
