Union Minister of the Human Resource Development Ministry Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday launched ‘Operation Digital Background’. The scheme offers Digital Blackboards to be equipped in over 9 lakh classrooms for introducing digital teaching practices.

“Some 60-70 years back there was an ‘Operation Blackboard’ because that was the need of the hour then. But the country has progressed over the years, and now we need an Operation Digital Blackboard,” Mr. Javadekar said during the launch.

For analyzing the needs and availability of digital blackboards in schools and colleges, the ministry formed a committee headed under Professor Ashok Jhunjhunwala of IIT Madras for finding solutions.

The report submitted by the committee revealed that there is a high need for digital education, emphasizing which it was announced by the Minister that seven lakh digital blackboards in classes 9-12, and two lakh for classes in higher education institutions are needed to be installed.

He informed that government will soon start working towards the movement and assured the completion of installing digital blackboards by 2022, starting from 75th independence day.
