The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath has announced that no merit list will be released this year for students of class 10 and 12. This decision was taken in a meeting held on June 13 with the officials of the secondary education board. Since the exams for UP Board class 10 and 12 are cancelled, no merit can be formulated.

In the view of exams being cancelled, students will be assessed on the basis of an alternate evaluation criteria which will mainly depend on the marks in mid-term and pre-board exams and performance in previous years. Thus students will likely get better but almost similar scores. so forming a merit list on that basis would be unfair.

The UP Board has also said that the students of this classes who remain unsatisfied with their marks tabulated by evaluation criteria will be given an additional opportunity to appear in exams next year at the time when secondary and higher secondary Board exams will be held. This provision has been made to give a fair chance to students for getting better scores.

According to reports, the School Education Board of UP has formed an experts committee under the leadership of Aradhna Shukla, the additional chief secretary, to devise an evaluation criteria for tabulating results of the cancelled exams. The Board has also sought inputs from various stakeholder upon marking scheme.

The preparation are in its final phase and the committee is almost ready to present their detailed reports to the Uttar pradesh government. However a final declaration of evaluation policy can only be expected once the official at higher level review the reports submitted by committee and approve them to be used for tabulation of results.

The Board has received around 4000 suggestions from students, parents, teachers and general public over the evaluation process and results. A number of parents suggested to lay off the declaration of merit list as it generates unhealthy competition among students. Merit list becomes objectionable when every student is evaluated by same method.
