Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) is an independent body which maintains and governs higher education by providing Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral degrees to students. There are 23 IITs and 13 IIMs across the country with IIT Bombay and IIM Ahmedabad being the best IIT and IIM respectively among all. But now quality faculty unavailability tackling the IITs across the country.
As per the data shared by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) led by Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ in the winter session of Parliament, there is a shortage of 3,709 teachers across 23 IITs with a total sanctioned faculty of 9,718. The situation is worst in top IITs of the country like IIT Kanpur, IIT Dhanbad and IIT Kharagpur with inadequate 305, 477 and 481 vacant faculty seats.
To improve the situation, 4% EWS (Economically Weaker Section) reservation has been implemented to increase 10% faculty across the country in these 23 IITs.
Although, HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said, “The number of faculty in position has increased from 5,072 in 2016 to 6,009 in 2019. However, due to the steep increase in student intake, the faculty positions have also increased… At present 249 faculties are working in IITs on a contract basis.”
The faculty will be selected carefully and everything from their class 10th mark sheet to Ph.D. will be taken into consideration, then they will be hired. They will not be selected just to fill up the 3,709 vacant seats.
