The Oscars nominations for this year were announced on Tuesday evening in a live event at the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theatre. The event was hosted by Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross.

Indian short film titled ‘Period. End of Sentence‘ has earned a nomination in the Documentary Short Subject category for the 91st Academy Awards. The 26-minute film is set in rural India and reflects the life of girls and women in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh and their experience with the installation of a pad machine.

Exploring the work of Arunachalam Muruganathan, the film has made it to top five nominees of the Documentary Short Subject category.

Muruganatham, on whom Bollywood film ‘Pad Man’ was based upon, brings an easy-to-operate machine to small towns and train women to operate them. Women who manufacture sanitary pads, sell them to local women at affordable prices retaining the profits of their labor. They name their brand “FLY”.

The film is sponsored by executive producer Guneet Monga and co-producer Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment and it is directed by the award-winning filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi.

Overwhelmed by the nominations, Monga told IANS over the phone: “We made it… It is beyond everything we thought.”

The producer shared his excitement on Twitter. She wrote, “We all made it happen! @RAYning @melissaberton @lisataback @StaceySher @Garrettschiff @douglasblush @mesopystic @samdavisdp and all the young girls who saw this dream from Oakwood school !! This is so EPIC,”

A month ago when the film was shortlisted under Documentary Short Subject category in the Oscar, Guneet shared the news from her Instagram account. She wrote, “Waking up to this shortlist!! So proud and soo exciting. Watch out for “Period. End of Sentence” our short documentary.” She mentioned the crew members of the film and also wrote, “I am so humbled to be a part of the producing team.”
