Actress Yami Gautam is currently riding high on the success of her latest release Bala where she has received widespread praise for her performance of a Tik Tok sensation in the film. Earlier this year, she acted in Uri: The Surgical Strike that emerged as a blockbuster and made it to the coveted Rs 200 crore club.

But as everyone would be aware, the preceding years were not so pleasant for her in terms of her films. She did make her debut with a bang in Vicky Donor and won wide acclaim and awards for her performance but the phase that followed was not so propitious and did not do much for her.

During a recent interview with Film Companion, she opened up about the dull phase after her first film and shared that she was stereotyped. “The kind of offers which followed I didn’t really feel they justified or were really something that I wanted to do. There was no challenge in them. Very sweet and simple roles were pouring in . I was told I am a very sweet-looking simple girl. I was being stereotyped. I didn’t know what to do. I signed a couple of films and they didn’t do well,” she said.

Nevertheless the actress does not regret her choices. “I would never disrespect my professional decisions because at that point of time it made sense. And whoever gives you an opportunity to work, one should always remember that. But I knew this is not the work. There is much more to me. But how will filmmakers have faith that I am a versatile actor and I am here to do some amazing roles,” she shared.

The actress confessed that she is not good at networking and even doubted her PR machinery at one point. She said, “I didn’t realize why after Vicky Donor I didn’t get those kind of roles. I am not a networker. I cannot talk to people just for the heck of it. So I thought let’s just give the best to it and then see what happens. Luckily Kaabil happened. People said my character died but I gave a sensitive performance. After that, some people also stopped me from signing Sarkar 3 but I felt I had a grey character and I wanted to do it. The film didn’t work. But luckily Uri happened in 2019.”
