It was reported last month that Deepika Padukone would be starring in a romantic film of Karan Johar’s production house. Now it has been disclosed that the Padmaavat actress has also come on board as a co-producer for this project.
It has also been revealed that Siddhant Chaturvedi who played MC Sher in Gully Boy will be seen opposite her. Pinkvilla quoted a source as saying, “Dippy’s film with Shakun has her playing the central character. She shoulders the film, that is a dark romantic drama, where Siddhant Chaturvedi has been paired opposite her. Karan and Deepika discussed the project and the actress really loved the idea. In fact, she also spoke to Karan and they both agreed to have her on board as a co-producer.”
Only a few days ago, Karan Johar announced during the trailer launch of Good Newwz that his production house makes sure both men and women working for them are paid well. He also revealed that in the next few months, he will soon make announcements where a female star headlining his production ventures, will also get a co-producer credit to it.
Deepika shared during this year’s Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival that she would be starring in a romantic film but not the regular one. While in conversation with Rajeev Masand and Anupama Chopra at the Jio MAMI Movie Mela With Star, the actress said, “I have found a film that I am likely to do early next year but it’s not light. It’s still a messy romance, it’s quite dark but still in the romantic space.”
It was later reported that the film in question would be directed by Dharma Productions’ in-house director Shakun Batra who has previously directed Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu of 2012 and the critically and commercially successful family drama Kapoor & Sons of 2016 for the banner.
This is not the first time Deepika Padukone will be co-producing a film. She is already producing and starring Meghna Gulzar’s directorial Chhapaak based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. She has also joined the team of producers of 83 where she will share the screen space with husband Ranveer Singh. She is also reported to be teaming up with producer Madhu Mantena to produce a film on Mahabharat where she will be playing the central character of Draupadi.
