Names have a relevance of their own, they represent a person, place or a group’s identity. Sometimes names, have to be changed for the sake of right projection.  This is what, the world famous, country band ‘The Dixie Chicks’, are doing. The band of three are dropping the word ‘Dixie’, as it represents the US’s southern states where chattel slavery was legal.

They will now go with the name, The Chicks and which they also reflected on their social media accounts. After 14 years, the band is coming out with a new album. The group which has three members Martie Maguire, Natalie Maines, and Emily Strayer, also shared a preview of their new song ‘March March’ from the album.

The song contains images from black lives matter protest rallies and images from the civil rights movement. While, the group is not the only one to have the name, The Chicks. Another band exists by the same name in New Zealand, which they acknowledged.

In a statement released by them, it read :

“A sincere and heartfelt thank you goes out to The Chicks of NZ for their gracious gesture in allowing us to share their name. We are honored to co-exist together in the world with these exceptionally talented sisters.”

Earlier, another country group, Lady Antebellum had changed their name. They had dropped the word ‘Antebellum’, as it is associated with slavery. The group which will now be known as Lady A, got severe criticism, after it was revealed that another black singer performs under the same name.

According to the Recording Industry Association of America, The Chicks are the best selling female group in America. They have sold over 33 million albums in the country. They received fame with their album ‘Wide Open Spaces’, they have also won 13 Grammys.
