The 1970s era more dramatic than today: Filmmaker Milan Luthria!

The Indian film director Milan Luthria says that the 1970’s era is more dramatic than today. Milan started his career in 1993 as an assistant director in the movie titled ‘Lootera’. He made his directorial debut in 1999 with the action thriller movie ‘Kacheche Dhaage’, which was released under the Tips Banner. The movie features Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan in the lead role. Later, in 2006 he directed a comedy thriller movie title ‘Taxi Number 9211’, which was produced by Ramesh Sippy. The movie feature John Abraham and Nana Patekar. The movie got a major commercial and critical success and it became the 16th highest grossing film in India in 2006. He rose the popularity with 2010 directed movie ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai’, featuring Ajay Devgn, where he played the role of Sultan Mirza. Later, Milan directed ‘The Dirty Picture’, featuring Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, Tusshar Kapoor and Emraan Hashmi. The movie was based on the real life of the late actress Silk Smitha.

Currently, Milan is gearing up for his upcoming Indian action thriller movie title ‘Baadshaho‘, which is the fourth collaboration with Ajay Devgn. The movie which is written by Rajat Arora. The movie is said to be a story of six badasses set in the emergency period of 1975 when they looted a truck full of gold. It stars Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Esha Gupta, Ileana D’Cruz and Vidyut Jammwal in the lead roles.

Recently, director Milan Luthra says that he is fascinated by the 1970’s drama because the people and the culture of that time have more elements of drama and emotions. His upcoming movie is also set in 1970, in the backdrop of the Emergency.

When asked the reason for making the film of that era, Milan said, “The reason is simple. I find people of that era more dramatic, more emotional than today’s generation. Nowadays, people fall in love, they break up and move on easily… Between two friends, people come close and go away easily. But earlier it was not like that. These days, everything looks the same. For me, drama comes from complexity… From how, in the same situation, three people thinking differently and that is changing the situation. Earlier, if friendship turned into enmity, it would go to a disastrous level. In fact, if you look at the international entertainment, whether it is ‘House Of Cards’ or ‘Game of Thrones’, it’s all about drama. Therefore, I prefer to explore that era in my stories.”

While Milan has also explored the dark side of the Bollywood industry by making the film “Once Upon A Time In Mumbai” and he has also made a movie on the life of an actress in “The Dirty Picture”. He always utilizes the power of modern technology in his storytelling. On this, Milan said, “I always try to create the different texture of every story. You cannot find the world of ‘Once Upon..’ in ‘Baadshaho’ because the latter is set in Rajasthan. The geography, culture, light, camera angles everything is very different that of the city Mumbai and I think that is one of the element as a director I emphasise on… use of technology. if I am narrating the story of an old era using modern technology, it becomes a visual treat for the audience. That’s how it works.”

His upcoming movie ‘Baadshaho’ will revolve around a royal family of Rajasthan and on how their property gets looted after the declaration of Emergency. On his Bonding with the actor Ajay Devgn, Milan said, “I think with any individual I meet, the first 10 minutes of our conversation defines our equation — either you get along, bond over something, or you don’t. with Ajay, that’s what happens, even though we do not talk to each other every day, we know we are bonded. So you don’t work on developing an equation, it happens naturally.”

“Baadshaho” is scheduled for September 1 release.
