David Fincher never fails to impress us with his style of filmmaking. The director has always proved his love and dedication towards the craft of cinema through his filmography. The one thing he is widely known for is his contribution to the genre of thrillers. He truly redefined the genre by various methods. And of all his works, Fight Club has been the popular one among the masses. The film is considered to be a masterpiece and won’t miss out on the list of best films ever made. The reason for which is that the film was high on the political note but the way of storytelling was a thrilling one which kept the viewers engaged throughout the film.

The final twist that unfolds in the climax is the finest turn and twist we ever saw in a movie and we must admit it. And every time you watch Fight Club, you will learn something new. Recently, on my rewatch of Fight Club, I admired Fincher’s technical way of storytelling and before I explain that to you thoroughly with an example, I would like to shed a light on how Fincher gave various hints through different shots.

A still from Fight Club

The story of Fight Club is told by an “unreliable narrator”. Here, the narrator (Edward Norton) is mentally ill and hence the story is not an objective reality but his recollection of events. The film gives various hints about the twist that unfolds during the climax throughout different and compelling shots.

One such shot is from the scene where the Project Mayhem is in full swing but the Police Commissioner comes across their way. And they need to warn him. And this scene comprises of various shots as they jump on the Commissioner in the restroom and tie him up. The most notable is a low angle looking up at Project Mayhem. Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) comes in from the top of the frame and looks down on the commissioner. The reverse is from the narrator’s POV looking down through Project Mayhem at the whole scene.
