Netherlands is preparing to launch online gambling market that would be regulated by government.

In the face of economic crisis where COVID-19 has acted as a catalyst, governments all over the world have been moving to legalize online gambling and regulate it.

Netherlands too may soon join the club where online gambling is still illegal.

The Government is planning to pass Remote Gambling Act which would allow the operators to obtain licenses for entering into the online gambling business.

The operators who wish to obtain the licenses have to show good behaviour atleast for the past 3 years.

Netherlands Senate approved the Bill on Remote Gambling in February 2019 and the date upto which the operators can submit their application has been set at March 2021. Earlier the date was January 2021 but it was pushed to March.

The chairman of the Kansspelautoriteit René Jansen said that once applications are received, it could take up to six months until a properly regulated market is launched.

The authorities continue to introduce new regulatory measures in a bid to regulate online gambling market. The regulatory measures also include monitoring of problem gambling behaviour, risky behaviour, central database etc.
