Grinding Gear announced the sequel to Path of Exile at the ExileCon event. Despite the title, it’s not actually a separate new game, but rather an expansion that also completely overhauls the base game in the process. The game is free-to-play, but unlike other titles, it doesn’t feature a single pay-to-win purchase.

The new game brings a number of changes and improvements to the base game, including changes to the Passive Skill Tree and an overhaul of many of the game’s core systems. Path of Exile 2 presents a seven-act storyline that takes place 20 years after the events of the original game. The two games run on parallel tracks leading to the same atlas end-game content. All the expansion content from the past six years of development along with any cosmetics players may have purchased will be available in both. Path of Exile 2 has the same set of seven character classes as the original but there are 19 new Ascendancy classes and the skill system has been redesigned.

There is no confirmed date of the launching of the game but Grinding Gear Games said it won’t likely even begin beta testing until very late in 2020.  According to Grinding Gear, Path of Exile expansions will continue to release on their regular three-month schedule, with content that will be available in both Paths of Exile 1 and 2 campaigns.
