A petition was filed on 12th January by Pauly Vadakkan’s lawyer Jomy K. Jose to ban online betting or gambling until appropriate regulations are framed by the state government.
This online betting and gambling includes Rummy,Poker and other such games that involve money transactions.
As a result, on 28th January , the Kerala High Court issued notice to all the parties enlisted in the petition. Following this the TN High Court passed a bill to ban rummy and similar apps in the state. Playing rummy may now invite 2 years of impriosonment or fine not exceeding Rs10000, or both in Tamil Nadu.
Notice has been issued to PlayGames 24×7 Pvt. Ltd. (which operates RummyCircle), Mobile Premier League, Virat Kohli, Aju Varghese and Tamannaah Bhatia. According to the government, these online games are leading to “unhealthy tendencies” in the society forcing the State Cabinet to take a decision to ban them as they are seen to be pushing the youth on to a wrong path.

The game of Rummy has been declared absolutely legal by the Supreme Court as it falls under the category of a “game of skill” and not “game of chance.” Hence, it is legal to play rummy online with the intention of winning cash.
