Earlier this week, Google updated its Google Camera to version 6.2 for its Pixel smartphones. The new version adds dark mode the camera UI along with new transition animations but apart from that, there were no significant upgrades to the app. Now, XDADevelopers have spotted strings that hint at a new feature called ‘Measure’. According to XDADevelopers, Google will be adding its augmented reality measuring app called “Measure” to the Google Camera.
The two new strings found in the teardown of the APK reveals that a “Measure mode” will be added to the Google Pixel’s stock camera app.
XDADeveloper’s senior member cstark27, a developer who works on Google Camera Mods, figured out a way to get the new Measure mode to show up in the ‘More’ tab in the camera app. The icon for the new features is similar to the icon of Google’s Measure app, which further hints that the new feature is indeed a part of augmented reality size measuring app. Launching the app, however, resulted in a crash with a logout output, according to XDADevelopers.
“An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by Google in a future build,” reported XDADevelopers.
“The reason for this crash is because we’re missing an app with the package name com.google.vr.apps.ornament.measure,” reported XDADevelopers. No app with such configuration is available on Google Play Store as Google has not launched it yet, the report adds. What is noteworthy here is that the first part of the package is named com.google.vr.apps.ornament,” which is similar to the package name for Playground–an add on feature that adds Playmoji, Stickers, and characters that interact with the user and the environment. Therefore, it can be said with a certain amount of certainty that Google will relaunch the Measure app as an add on to the Playground. Playground and Measure apps are only supported on Google Pixel smartphones, so the new Measure app is not expected to roll out to devices by other smartphone makers.
