In fresh trouble for Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday issued a notice to Congress Chief over his citizenship. He has been asked by the MHA to furnish a response with a ‘fortnight’ of the receipt of the communication.

The Development came after receiving a complaint from Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Subramanian Swamy. In which he alleged that the Congress President Rahul Gandhi is the director of a UK headquartered company, where he has shown his nationality as British.

Union Home Ministry in the notice issued by BC Joshi, Director (Citizenship) stated, “This Ministry has received a representation from Dr. Subramanian Swamy, Hon’ble M.P. in which it has been brought out that a Company named Backops Limited was registered in the United Kingdom in the year 2003, with address 51 Southgate Street, Winchester, Hampshire S023 9EH and that you were one of the Directors and Secretary of the said Company”.

It further added that “It has been further brought out in the complaint that in the Company’s Annual Returns filed on 10/10/2005 and 31/10/2006, your date of birth has been given as 19/06/1970 and that you had declared your nationality as British. Further, in the Dissolution application dated 17/02/2009 of the above-referred company, your nationality has been mentioned as British.”

Reacting on the development, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, ‘When a member of Parliament writes to any ministry, action required on their query is taken. It is not a big development, it is a normal process.’

However, similar petition raising questions on the citizenship were dismissed by the Top Court in the year 2015.

Earlier in a run-up to the national elections 2019, Rahul Gandhi’s nominations from Amethi parliamentary Seat was deferred after an independent candidate Dhruv Lal raised questions over his Citizenship. Ravi Prakash, an advocate of Dhruv Lal raising objections asserted that in the certificate of incorporation of a company registered in the United Kingdom, Rahul Gandhi has declared himself as a UK citizen.

However, the returning officer Ram Manohar Misra accepted the Congress President’s nomination papers and declared it as ‘valid’.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi in the national elections is contesting from two seats – Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in Kerela.
