The UGC told the court that the cut-off date for admission to colleges is October-end and that students would be eligible to get admission if the CBSE declares the results of the compartment exam before that date.

The petition seeking an extension of college admission deadlines was heard by a bench led by Justice AM Khanwilkar since CBSE conducted the compartment examination in the last week of September.

In the case, the petitioner has impleaded the University Grants Commission as the court had found that the UGC will be capable of determining if, the college admission deadlines should be extended.

For the Union of India, Assistant Solicitor General Rupinder Singh Suri appeared. Senior Advocate Vivek Tankha (appearing for a student) said that he was asked to send a copy of the solution to the Center and if students don’t get admissions, then what is the use of exams?

Tankha said that admissions should be immediately reported after the compartment tests are completed so that admissions can take place. He said that the UGC in the academic calendar should fit the students in the compartment.

The bench said that, because the careers of 2 lakh students rely on it, it can order the CBSE to announce results before that as the number is not a small, the bench observed.

On September 24, the matter will be dealt with again. A joint statement on the announcement of results and admissions must be made by the CBSE and the UGC, was asked by the court.
