Weapons are for people’s security, not a show off things or a status symbol, said Delhi High Court.

An individual pleads for an arms license, as he deals with Rs 2-3 lakhs every day, and he needs a weapon for his security. Delhi Court and Lieutenant Governor denied his plea for an arms license. The Court said that India is not a lawless country and every citizen need not possess weapons for its protection. The court said that there were no circumstances shown by the petitioner that could create any threat to his life. The petitioner deals with Rs 2-3 lakhs every day and that too of a third party does not by itself show that there is any threat to that individual. LG agreed to the same.

Though there is an Arms Act in the Constitution which ensures that weapons are available to citizens for self-defense but it does imply that license should be given to every individual. The object of the Act is self-defence. The grant of Arms license is a privilege conferred by the Act. There is no fundamental right of an individual to hold an arm. License to hold an arm is to be granted where there is a necessity not merely for showoff purpose.
