The Election Commission of India on Friday allowed Congress President Rahul Gandhi to file a reply till May 7 in connection to an alleged violation of the model code of conduct over his ‘tribal’ remarks. The Poll Commission had on May 1 while issuing a notice, asked Congress Chief to file a reply within 48 hours.

The Poll Body had issued a notice to Congress Chief for saying that Narendra Modi government has made a new rule under which the tribals can be shot. Rahul Gandhi while addressing a rally in Shahdol district of poll-bound Madhya Pradesh which according to EC violated the para 2 of the model code of conduct prima facie.

Rahul Gandhi in a rally reportedly said, ‘Now Narendra Modi has enacted a new law in which tribals can be shot. All your resources will be taken, Your land will be taken, your water will be taken, your forests will be taken and under the new law, they can show you too’.

Prior to this, Election Commission of India in April last month issued a notice to Congress President Rahul Gandhi for violation of Model Code of Conduct over Congress’ NYAY banner put up on a wall in Amethi parliamentary seat.

The Election Commission in another development on Friday gave a green signal to PM Narendra Modi on two more complaints of the alleged violation of the model code of conduct. With this, the Poll Commission this week has altogether let off PM Modi in 5 cases of the alleged violation of the poll code.

It should be noted that the Poll Commission in the past 2-3 days has granted 3 ‘clean chits’ to PM Modi over his election speeches. Congress had moved to the Poll Commission with multiple complaints against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah. However, till now, EC gave 5 clean chits to PM Modi and two such to BJP Chief Amit Shah.

Supreme Court had on May 3 directed the Election Commission to decide before May 6, the 9 complaints filed by Congress party against PM Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct.

General Elections 2019 has already begun and is being across seven phases starting April 11 to May 19. The remaining 169 Lok Sabha seats will go to polls in remaining three phases.

Counting of the votes will be held on May 23.
