The transactions in Madhya Pradesh Assembly on Thursday had seen multiple adjournments amid the protest by BJP over the procedure followed to elect the Deputy Speaker of the House. Bhartiya Janta Party had fielded Jagdish Devde for the Deputy post.

All started with Assembly Speaker NP Prajapati read out four separate proposals of treasury benches to elect the two-time legislator Ms. Kawre, 33, as deputy speaker.

BJP and Leader of Opposition in the House, Gopal Bhargava objected to this, saying his party’s proposal to elect Lawmaker Jagdish Devde should also be read out with other four proposals.

Bhargava including other BJP’s Lawmaker also pressed the same demand to the speaker. On which Speaker Prajapati did not pay heed following which BJP lawmakers started protesting, and jumped into the well.

Earlier on January 8, Congress MLA NP Prajapati was elected as Speaker of the 15th Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly on January 8 after BJP Lawmakers staged a walkout in protest of the protem speaker’s refusal to let the opposition party propose the name of its nominee for the Speaker post.

Chief Minister Kamal Nath as reported by ANI, said, that he is not happy by breaking the tradition but blamed BJP for starting the tussle for the post.

He said, “I am unhappy that we have to go against the tradition. I had requested opposition to set an example in front of the newly elected members. But since last 10-12 days, the attempts were made to get MLAs of other parties on their side. The tradition that has been in existence is of having the Speaker from the ruling party and deputy speaker from the opposition’

He added. “However, BJP filed the nomination for speaker post against the norm. They thought that they will able to elect their own speaker nominee. They (BJP) believed there will be a rift in Congress and that’s why they filed nomination papers. Since they started this, we decided we will fight election for the post of deputy speaker.” as quoted by news wire ANI.
