After the Election Commission announced that polling in Tripura east constituency shall be held on April 23, postponing from April 18 owing to the miscreant elements thwarting the electoral process, The CPIM general secretary Sitaram Yechury has asked the Election commission to conduct repoll in 464 booths in Tripura West Lok Sabha seats.

The election Commission deferred the polls in Tripura east citing a law and order situation. the polls were supposed to be held in the second phase of the elections, but now Tripura east will go to polls in the third phase of the elections on April 23.

Sitaram Yechury has sought the Election Commission to conduct free and fair elections. He took to twitter saying, “It is now established that there were large scale irregularities while conducting the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections.” He said that EC should ensure the faith in the democracy is reaffirmed. He said that the repoll in 464 booths will let the people to exercises their franchise independently.

However, according to the various media reports, BJP workers allegedly were rigging the EVMs and intimidating the voters in the polling booth in the first phase of election in Tripura west on April 18.

The Congress party also alleged the BJP workers of rigging and disturbing the polling. The Congress also complained of deliberate absence of the Central parliamentary forces at the site of the polling.

The East Tripura constituency will see a four-cornered fight between Communist Party of India Marxist (CPIM), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura.
