Communal riots broke out in Baduria Sub-district of Basirhat district of West Bengal on Monday, after some unknown person posted an objectionable post on Facebook. Centre had provided 800 army troops to WB government to curb the situation in the area but Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declined the additional help of 400 troops for no specific reasons. Though no incidents of violence were reported in past days, the recent arrest of different party leaders tells a different story.

BJP along with Congress and few other parties had decided to send their party members to the regions of unrest and find the real cause behind them. Following the decision, a BJP delegation led by MP Roopa Ganguly reached the area but was not allowed to enter the region and was detained by the police near New Barrackpur area when they were on their way to riot-hit Basirhat area in North 24 Parganas district.

The delegation headed by Roopa along with BJP leaders Shamik Bhattachariya and Locket Chatterjee were taken to the Airport police station after being detained.

Responding to the arrest Shamik Bhattachariya said that, “this is not the area where section 144 is imposed. Police could not detain us from here. Actually, the Govt is suffering from BJP-fear. This is the reason of stopping us from going to Basurhat.”

Other than the BJP delegation, Left leaders Mohammad Selim, Sujan Chakraborty and Tanmoy Bhattacharya and Congress delegation led by Adhir Chowdhury was also stopped to enter the region. Following the arrest of BJP leaders and stopping of Left Party and Congress leaders to enter, the leaders demonstrated protested and agitated along the Jassore Road.
