More about the gift return policy:
The Google Store has launched a brand new gift returns web page. After logging in with your Google account, you’ll need to enter the order ID number and shipping zip code. You might also have to deal with a potentially embarrassing dialog requesting the individual who got you that the gift to your purchase ID. It will then see the orders that you received as gifts (if there are more than one), choose which one you want to return, and then submit it to Google. You will then receive return an email with the return shipping labels so you can post the device back to Google. Once it has already reached the Google Store, you can then receive credits to your account in the amount of the original purchase cost.
You won’t get cash in return. You’ll get store credit so you can, later on, buy what you really want.
