China has on Thursday, again probed a Canadian over suspicion of harming Chinese national security, a day after China investigated and detained a former diplomat of Canada. China has investigated Canadian businessman Michael Spavor, who use to work with North Korea.

According to news reports, the Canadian businessman was under the investigation of China since December 10, under Chinese state security bureau in the city of Dandong of northeastern China, which almost borders North Korea.

No further details were disclosed yet by the China government, though it announced that Spayor’s case has followed the recent detention of Canadian former diplomat Michael Kovrig in China, who does works for an International Crisis Group (ICG).

According to news reports, the state security has reported that the investigation over Spavor was based on the same charges, which were charged on Kovrig.

When asked about the base of the investigation and detention of Spayor, Chinese foreign ministery spokesperson Lu Kang said that both Spayor and Kovrig were doing wrong to Chinese national security and were suspected over harming the national security, and thus detained after continuous investigation on Spayor since December 10, 2018.

According to a news briefing, Lu said, “The legal rights and interests of these two Canadians have been safeguarded.” Lu further added saying that “these two cases are in the process of being investigated separately”.

Lu further said that the Canadian embassy has been already acknowledged to the process of the investigation of Spayor with declining to disclose any further details of the probe.
