Cross-border fighting between Hamas and Israel was stopped on Tuesday after a day of Israeli air strikes and Palestinian rocket launch attacks, but however, tensions between both sides remained high with Israeli forces gathered along the Gaza border.

According to Reuters news reports, rocket warning sirens has continued to sound in Israel near its border late on Monday after an official from Palestine said Egypt mediated a cease. However, the border area had fallen quite by Tuesday morning.

On Monday, a flare-up began when found seven Israelis wounded near Tel Aviv caused by a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip, around 120 km away.

Hours later, Israel which has blamed Hamas for the rocket attack, carried numerous retaliatory strikes wounding five Palestinians. Additional soldiers, as well as tanks, have been stationed at the border of Gaza and Israel, according to the military.

On Monday night, Gaza militant fighters fired rockets into Israel’s town. Some militants were shot down by the Israeli forces and others landed in some empty areas.

The military has said it remained “prepared for various scenarios”.

The cross-border fighting came ahead of an election in Israel, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is preparing and battling for his political life after a decade on power.

In fact, the Netanyahu has been charged for corruption scandals, where he is facing a strong challenge from the centrist coalition which is led by a top general.

Due to cross-border fighting, Netanyahu has cut short his official visit to Washington, after holding a meeting with United States President Donald Trump. Netanyahu was due to visit Tel Aviv later in the day.

Boarding his flight back home, Netanyahu said Israel had delivered “a very, very forceful response”.
